Speaker Profiles

Russell Jon Batty

Business Manager, Gtech

Russell Jon Batty brings unparalleled operational and technical expertise to the commercial landscape of tunnel technology. His distinguished career began with a five-year apprenticeship with British Coal in the UK after leaving school at 16, laying the foundation for his extensive industry journey. He progressed to become an electrical foreman on major mining projects worldwide, gaining hands-on experience in diverse mining methods such as NATM, stoping, shaft sinking, and TBM tunnelling.

His tenure with Herrenknecht, a leading TBM manufacturer, further strengthened his technical expertise as a PLC Electrician and later as an Electrical Manager. Russell later joined Gamuda as Electrical Manager on the KVMRT SSP Line 2 project, where he played a key role in forming the A-TBM technical team, providing critical leadership and technical oversight.

Today, at Gtech, Russell leverages his deep industry knowledge to drive strategic growth, develop market opportunities, and cultivate strong client partnerships. He focuses on transforming Gtech’s innovative tunnelling technologies into successful commercial solutions that deliver measurable value to the industry and the public.

Liew Kit Shen

Technical Product Manager, Gtech

As a Technical Product Manager at Gtech, Liew Kit Shen specialises in advancing cutting-edge tunnel technology. He holds an M.Eng in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Birmingham, UK, which provides a strong technical foundation for his work. His background in R&D leadership and comprehensive understanding of the tunnelling sector equip him with a diverse skill set.

Liew’s full-stack engineering experience enables him to contribute to advanced software solutions, including autonomous tunnel boring technology (ATBM) and high-fidelity tunnel inspection and TBM simulators. Passionate about transforming complex engineering strategies into practical solutions, he also draws upon his UI/UX design expertise to ensure intuitive and effective digital products.

His work focuses on innovations that improve efficiency, safety, and real-time decision-making—advancing both industry best practices and the performance of modern tunnelling systems.

Feng Zhipeng

Technical Manager, CREG Singapore

Feng Zhipeng leads the overall design of Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) and Slurry Tunnel Boring Machines (SPB TBM) at CREG Singapore. He has overseen more than 15 TBM deliveries for major construction projects, ensuring successful manufacturing and site deployment.

He holds a Master’s degree in Mechanical Manufacturing and Automation from Zhengzhou University in Henan Province. Feng first joined CREG’s Technical Center and Tunnel Boring Machine Research Institute, where he spent eight years designing TBMs and contributing to the development of cutterheads, rolling stock, and cutting tools.

His extensive involvement in TBM innovation includes developing large-diameter EPB and SPB machines with advanced features such as accessible cutterheads, continuous mining systems, and double-layer shield skins. These cutting-edge designs have been applied in multiple projects, including Singapore’s Cross Island Line Phase 1.

Webinar Abstract

Digging Smarter, Not Harder

Explore the future of tunnelling with Gtech’s Autonomous TBM (ATBM) programme and the Tunnel Insight platform. The session highlights four key automation modules—Auto Steering, Auto Advance, Auto Excavation Control, and Auto Slurry—designed to enhance safety, precision, and productivity through seamless plug-and-play integration.

Participants will review real results from the KVMRT Line 2 project and experience a live demonstration of Tunnel Insight 3.5, showcasing advanced analytics, automated reporting, and performance optimisation.

Mechanized Construction of Cross Passages & Main Tunnel Pump Station

This session examines how mechanised methods are transforming underground development. It introduces innovative techniques for constructing tunnel cross passages and pump stations, with a strong focus on safety, efficiency, and sustainability.

Attendees will gain valuable insight into modern tunnelling solutions that support interconnected underground networks, meeting the needs of future urban environments.
